101 Inspirational Travel Quotes to Fuel Your Wanderlust

October 27, 2018
“Not all those who wander are lost.” ~ J. R. R. Tolkien

Travel quotes are cheesy. Yet we often find ourselves writing them down on our journals or hanging them on our walls. Some even go beyond the extremes by inking them on their skin.

I remember a former classmate who took notes of quotes at every opportunity. Most of us secretly laughed at his habits only to find ourselves decades later sharing the same whenever we chance upon something that hits a chord in social media.

What follows is a large collection of my favorite inspirational travel quotes I came across over the years. Don’t forget to read down to the last one for an interesting twist.

#101 “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” ~ Saint Augustine

Travel Quotes -- The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. ~ Saint Augustine

That last is most popular with everyone but one I like the least. It is purportedly a passage from Saint Augustine but now just screams so much of prejudice and over-criticism.

Not that the quote is actually bad but the way travelers interpret it nowadays is giving the passage a discrimanating reputation. Long-term travelers are using it to implicitly look down on other people. Like your decision or incapacity to travel makes you a much lesser person.

Long-term and immersion types of traveling, whether we agree or not, require time and, most importantly, money. Both of which not everyone has the luxury of. It’s just not for everyone.

The passage reminds me of several unrelated but similar unpleasantries in the past.

Like that past colleague who I was sent with for a business trip to Japan. Who, upon learning I went one weekend in Tokyo Disneyland, blatantly expressed how he would never waste money for such trips. The same colleague who felt humiliated when a Japanese colleague asked why they were eating canned food despite the company giving them more than enough pocket money per day.

There was also this other colleague who, upon learning about my trip to the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia, told me in a sarcastic way how it was “cool” and that I was indeed a “blogger.” Only to find out that he even went “live” on Facebook during a similar trip in the country.

And similarly, the girl in a travel forum who appalled everyone by expressing that traveling in a place should last at least a month. Anything less is not traveling at all. The same girl who made me realize how true travel quotes #47, #49, and #50 really are. Especially #50. Truly, no amount of traveling will ever be enough to turn an ass into a horse.

My point is, traveling is not for everyone. Or to say the least, everyone has a different style and purpose for traveling. No single person, much less a quote, will be the only definitive way of traveling.
